So we made it to LA on Sunday evening. Both of us kept singing Sheryl Crow’s “All I wanna do is have some fun” – because she sings “This is LA!” and we just kept saying that!
Brent, Zach’s brother who lives in the LA area, had to work late – so we decided we’d do some sight-seeing on our own… with the handy GPS and the iPhone, we can get anywhere! On the way to our hotel, we stopped at a place called the Watts Towers – it’s a National Landmark Zach found while researching our trip and when I told him we’d be driving close to it, we decided we should stop and check it out. It was interesting art – kind of like when we wanted to stop and see the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, TX last summer – random, weird art – but worth stopping to see! We drove towards downtown LA, through China Town, up on Mulholland Drive, through Bel Air and UCLA. It was a fun little drive to get us familiar with the LA area and then we called it an early night.
Monday morning we got up early and Brent met us at our hotel. He had great “tour-guide” plans ready for us! We drove through Hollywood and stopped at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre to see the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It was cool to see all the stars on the sidewalk. Right in front of Graumans was the cemented parts where certain actors have been asked to imprint their hands, shoes, writing, etc. We found Dick Van Dyke’s cement impressions and had Brent pose for a picture. Brent works with Dick and so the picture was quite fitting! We saw the Kodak Theatre and saw a crew setting up for a “Bedtime Stories” DVD premiere on the stairs. We took a walk down Rodeo Drive and decided we were hungry! We drove out to Malibu to eat at The Marmalade Cafe – where Brent works. We met all his co-workers and had a wonderful lunch! Then we headed up in the hills of Malibu to a view of the entire LA area that was beautiful! After a little more driving around, we headed back to the hotel to get cleaned up to then head out for dinner.
We had dinner in Santa Monica and then said good-bye to Brent. It was so nice to spend a whole day with him!! At the end of the night, Zach and I took a walk down the Santa Monica Pier and took some fun pictures of the Ferris Wheel in the dark night.
